An Analysis of Media Coverage on COVID-19 Vaccine Using Topic Modeling

Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to analyze media coverage and to provide policy suggestions.

Methods: Using R programming, NAVER¡¯s and DAUM¡¯s 95,377 news articles(January 20, 2020 to July 31, 2021) regarding ¡®COVID-19 Vaccine¡¯ are collected and examined using topic modeling.

Results: The news articles are categorized into 7 topics: Vaccination (14,080 cases, 20.0%), vaccine effectiveness (10,496 cases, 14.9%), production (10,196 cases, 14.5%), side effects (9,761 cases, 13.8%), distribution (9,674 cases, 13.7%), securing vaccine (9,515 cases, 13.5%), review and permission (6,833 cases, 9.7%).

Conclusions: in order to continue vaccination smoothly, it is needed to create an environment for Solutions Journalism, to improve the manual for more cooperative relationship with the media, to strengthen social media channels, and additionally consider online influencer as a communication channel. It is also necessary to do the media's self-efforts for Solutions Journalism and discuss global vaccine inequality.
